After School Tutoring

Dear Parents,

I want to remind you that if you are eligible for free or reduced price lunches, your child may receive extra help after school in reading and/or math.  This after school tutoring is at no cost to you.  If you already qualify for free or reduced price lunches or for 3Squares Vermont, you do not need to do any extra paperwork.  If you are not sure, you can give Mrs. McAllister a call at 868-5346x205 and she can check for you.  Mrs. Steeneck is always available to help fill out the forms.  If you don’t want to fill out the hot lunch form, you can provide us with other proof that you would qualify, such as your eligibility for the 3Squares Vermont program.  Some income requirements have changed, and with this economy it’s a good idea to check to see if your family might be eligible.

If you want the free tutoring for your child, you get to choose the program that you think will work best for your child from the list of State approved providers attached to this letter. The Franklin Northwest Supervisory Union is now an approved provider, and some local teachers are working in the program.  This means the tutoring can be done here at our school.  If the tutoring is coordinated with the Crossroads transportation, your child may ride the Crossroads bus.  Still, if you want to choose any of the other providers on the list, you can do that.  There is a limit on the total amount of tutoring we can provide for each student during the school year and summer.

Are you interested? If you are, please be sure to fill out the free/reduced lunch form and the attached interest form.  You can always speak to your child’s teacher if you need more information.  The deadline for letting us know if you are interested is Wednesday, March 10th.

In 2008-2009, 253 Swanton Elementary students were eligible for the Supplemental Educational Services (after-school tutoring) funded by the Federal Government. These children were eligible because they qualified for free or reduced price lunches. This is the way the Federal Law is written.

Of those 253 students, 31 applied for the tutoring. Of those 31 students, 15 students completed the program. 16 students did not finish. This was usually because of conflicts with sports or other after school activities. Some students had trouble with transportation.

This year, we are trying to help with transportation by connecting the tutoring with the Crossroads and Crossroads Explorers program, which does allow some students to ride the Crossroads bus after tutoring.
