Second Grade Bike Rodeo

As part of their annual Service Learning Project, students in second grade learned about bike safety and helped plan a Bike Rodeo for their peers. Second graders were responsible for advertising the event and made posters which were placed around the halls at school. They watched a Bike Safety video made by students and then made their own videos which will soon air on Channel 15.

Click here to watch the video that the students watched.

The Swanton Police Department came to put on the Bike Safety Rodeo for students in grades 1-3 on Tuesday, May 4. Approximately 20 students and parents joined in on the fun. They brought their bikes and helmets and were led through a series of stations. Brakes, chains and tires were checked before they began. Helmets were adjusted to ensure an accurate fit. Officer Rich taught the students how to use hand signals which they then practiced on an obstacle course set up in the Babcock School Parking Lot. Vermont Fit & Healthy Coalition donated snacks for all and each participant received a certificate, a “report card”, and a water bottle.

Three bikes donated by the Swanton PTO were raffled off. Two boys who won decided to donate their prizes back so that someone else could win since they each already owned a bike! Winners were Grace Kinney, Adam Woodward, and Sophie Nichols.

Special thanks to Chief Stell, Officer Gilbert, and Officer Rich from the Swanton Police Department, Brent Coon, Julie Benay, Carlo Micheli, Mary Wood, Swanton PTO, Porter’s Bike Shop, and the Vermont Fit & Healthy Coalition.
